Overall Performance
State Income Quintiles - ACS

For data in the 2016 Scorecard that measure disparities by income, household income is divided into quintiles, and each quintile represents 20% of the population. The first income quintile represents the poorest fifth of the population (1-20%), the second quintile represents the next fifth (21-40%), and so on.

In measuring disparity by income in the Scorecard, outcomes of the top (richest) quintile are compared to outcomes of the bottom (poorest) quintile. For example, homeownership by income is a ratio of the homeownership rate in the top (richest) quintile with the homeownership rate in the bottom (poorest) quintile. In an effort to improve the accuracy of the data, data are calculated based on income quintiles that have been determined for each state; previous Scorecard editions calculated data based on national income quintiles.
