Change in Average Credit Card Debt
Definition
Percentage change in average borrower credit card debt, Quarter 3, 2001 – Quarter 3, 2012, adjusted to 2012 dollars.
Description
When borrowers utilize a high percentage of the revolving credit available to them, it can have a negative impact on their credit score, which in turn makes it difficult to qualify for other types of affordable credit, such as a mortgage. In addition, too much revolving debt drains wealth and negatively affects a household’s ability to build assets. This indicator tracks the change over time, in 2012 dollars, of average credit card debt held by the typical borrower.
